Power of NOW - Quotes from EckHart Tolle

Have you read this book?

Here are some interesting quotes and some best lines from this mind blowing book by Eckhart Tolle!

Just read one by one slowly & digest the essence of this pearl of wisdom.

Quotes & Wisdom from Power of NOW:-

“There is one certain criterion by which you can measure your success in mindfulness practice: the degree of peace that you feel within.”

***

"I would say about 80 to 90 percent of most people’s thinking is not only repetitive and useless, but because of its dysfunctional and often negative nature, much of it is also harmful. Observe your mind and you will find this to be true. It causes serious leakage of vital energy.

***

"Just as you cannot fight the darkness, you cannot fight the pain-body. Trying to do so would create inner conflict and thus further pain. Watching is enough. Watching it implies accepting it as part of what *is* at that moment"

***

"The reason why you don’t put your hand in the fire is not because of fear, it’s because you know that you’ll get burned. You don’t need fear to avoid unnecessary danger—just a minimum of intelligence and common sense"

"If it is the quality of your consciousness at this moment that determines the future, then what is it that determines the quality of your consciousness? Your degree of presence. So the only place where true change can occur and where the past can be dissolved is the Now.”

***

"Ask yourself: Is there joy, ease, and lightness in what I am doing? If there isn’t, then time is covering up the present moment, and life is perceived as a burden or a struggle.”

***

"Are you stressed? Are you so busy getting to the future that the present is reduced to a means of getting there? Stress is caused by being ‘here’ but wanting to be ‘there,’ or being in the present but wanting to be in the future"

***

“Watch any plant or animal and let it teach you the acceptance of what *is*, surrender to the Now. Let it teach you Being. Let it teach you integrity—which means to be one, to be yourself, to be real. Let it teach you how to live and how to die, and how *not* to make living and dying into a problem.”

***

"The present moment is all you ever have. There is never a time when your life is not ‘this moment.’ Is this not a fact?”

***

“There is nothing wrong with striving to improve your life situation. You can improve your life situation, but you cannot improve your life. Life is primary. Life is your deepest inner Being. It is already whole, complete, perfect. Your life situation consists of your circumstances and your experiences. There is nothing wrong with setting goals and striving to achieve things. The mistake lies in using it as a substitute for the feeling of life, for Being. The only point of access for that is the Now. You are then like an architect who pays no attention to the foundation of a building but spends a lot of time working on the superstructure.”

Say thanks even for negative things in your life

When things go wrong, when we’re not happy, when people are mean to us, when we are torn down by the dozen poisonous arrows of everyday life … we don’t want to say thank you. But in truth, this is the time when it matters most.

When life gets you down, when you are hurt or angry or confused or frustrated, take a moment to stop and close your eyes and find things to be thankful for. Your health, your family, your job, the house you live, the fact that you’ll have a next meal, the beauty of the world around you, the good people in your life. Whatever you can think of, be thankful for them … and express that gratitude somehow. Realize that all is not bad in this world, and be happy for that.

And then, when you’ve mastered that skill, think of the negative things in your life … and give thanks for them.

That person who was mean to you? Thank them for teaching you patience and understanding.

That person who hurts your ego? Thank him for teaching you humility.

The natural disaster you went through? Thank it for reminding you of what is important in life.

The illness you are going through? Thank it for making you stronger.

Anything negative in life is teaching you something. Just say thanks to negative things in life.

How to schedule the first one hour of the day - My personal practice

The first one hour of the day determines your day, week, year & life. Here is a simple template I had personally practiced during my earlier part of my life. Good template for beginners.

If you do not have one hour, then accordingly modify the template. You can add or drop and customize according to your lifestyle. There is nothing called right or wrong.

First 10 mins - Physical Energization Exercise (Stretching, Basic Asanas or Surya Namaskar, Skipping, Jogging, Walking in your terrace etc)

Second 10 mins - Breathing Exercises - Deep abdominal breathing, Pranayama etc

Third 10mins - Silence/Meditation/Gratitude

Fourth 10mins - Read a self development book, close the book & note down key points in a journal

Fifth 10 mins - Set goals for the day - for the next 24 hour only

Sixth 10 mins - Close your eyes, mentally rehearse the day, pay your gratitude to your parents, family, friends, colleagues, company & the creator for all that you have right now in your life.

The timeline prescribed is only a guideline. You can modify the time allotment according to your interest levels. Success is guaranteed when you sincere apply this learning in your life.

Mindfulness - A Receipe for Happy Living

“Do you have patience to wait till your mud settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoving till the right action arises by itself?” - Lao Tzu

Are you simply moving through your day, without fully living?

I did this for many years. It was as if life were just passing by, and I was waiting for something to happen. I always felt like I was preparing for something later.

But today isn’t preparation for tomorrow. Today’s the main event.

How can you bring calm and peace to the middle of a stress-ful, chaotic day?

The answer is simple, though not always so easy to put into practice: learn to be present.

No matter how out-of-control your day is, no matter how stressful your job or life becomes, the act of being present can become an oasis. It can change your life, and

it’s incredibly simple.

The idea of being mindful — being present, being more conscious of life as it happens — seems a bit impossible to many of the super busy.

But not only is it possible, I’d submit that it’s desirable, and that it’ll help the busy (and non-busy) achieve their goals and enjoy life more fully.

So, What is Mindfulness?

My own definition of mindfulness is very simple:

Mindfulness is the gentle & soft effort to be continuously present with the current flow of experience.

Jon Kabat-Zinn’s definition of mindfulness:

“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way;On purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.”

WOW - Paying attention “on purpose”

Here is another definition by Juliet Adams, Director of A Head for Work:-

He explains as The ABC of mindfulness

A is for awareness – Becoming more aware of what you are thinking and doing – whats going on in your mind and body.

B is for “just Being” with your experience.  Avoiding the tendency to respond on auto-pilot and feed problems by creating your own story.

C is for seeing things and responding more wisely.  By creating a gap between the experience and our reaction to, we can make wiser choices.

The benefits of Mindfulness include

Helping individuals to:

  1. Recognize, slow down or stop automatic and habitual reactions.
  2. Respond more effectively to complex or difficult situations.
  3. See situations more clearly
  4. Become more creative
  5. Make clear & effective decisions
  6. Achieve balance and resilience at work and at home

Since the late 1970's there have been more than 1000 publications documenting medical and psychological research on mindfulness which demonstrate its validity and breadth of application.

How to Be Mindful

1. Do one thing at a time. Do Single-task and a big NO to multi-task. Remember the Zen proverb: “When walking, walk. When eating, eat.”

2. Do it slowly and deliberately.

3. Do less. If you do less, you can do those things more slowly, more completely and with more concentration.

4. Spend at least 5 minutes each day doing nothing. Just sit in silence. Become aware of your thoughts. Focus on your breathing. Notice the world around you. Become comfortable with the silence and stillness. It’ll do you a world of good — and just takes 5 minutes!

6. Stop worrying about the future – focus on the present. Just focus on what you’re doing, right now. Enjoy the present moment.

7. When you’re talking to someone, be present. Focus on being present, enjoy your time listening to that person.

8. Keep practicing. When you get frustrated, just take a deep breath. When you ask yourself, “What should I do now, Self?”, the answer is “keep practicing”.

“When you drive around the city and come to a red light or a stop sign, you can just sit back and make use of these twenty or thirty seconds to relax — to breathe in, breathe out, and enjoy arriving in the present moment. There are many things like that we can do.” - Thich Nhat Hanh

Some Simple Mindfulness Exercises

Here are few exercises which I practice regularly. You don’t need to do all of these, but give a few of them a try to see if they make your day better.

Mindfulness Exercise # 1- Do One Action Mindfully - Coffee Meditation

For me, preparing my morning coffee is a mindful meditation. I am completely with myself right from the time I get into the kitchen, open the refrigerator, pick the milk cover, pick the scissors, cut the cover, pour the milk in the vessel, keep the vessel on the stove, throw the cover in the dustbin, put the scissors back into the shelf, pick up the lighter, heat the stove, open the coffee powder can, putting the coffee powder in the coffee maker, fill a tumbler of water, pour into the coffee maker, switch on the coffee maker, continue my breathing practice until the milk boils, mindfully look at the milk rising to the brim, smell the aroma of coffee, pour the decoction into the tumbler, pour the milk into the tumbler, open the sugar can, add a teaspoon of sugar, stir it, see the coffee swirling around, drop the spoon in the sink, close everything, hold the coffee in the hand, feel the warmth in your hand, feel the aroma, switch off the lights, mindfully walk with the coffee to the study table, place it on the table, look at it for a moment happily, gently sip the coffee, feel the hot coffee down into your throat & getting energized - This is
called Coffee Meditation.

BTW, did you feel the coffee in your throat now, if so you were mindful reading this article, you should pick one short action which you do every day and perform that action mindfully. For example, if every day you walk to the door, open it, and bend down to pick up the newspaper, start doing that action mindfully.

Mindfulness Exercise # 2- The Room In Your Head

This is an amazing technique that’s recommended by Karla McLaren for bringing all of your attention to the same place. Karla indicates that you should mentally create a room in your head. Decorate the room however you like. Your eyes are the windows. Make sure that there’s a comfortable chair in the room.Whenever you feel your mind leaving the present moment and wandering off, visualize yourself coming back into the room in your head and sitting in the chair. At the moment in which your consciousness is “sitting in the chair”, your mind and body become one, and you’re fully in the present.

Mindfulness Exercise # 3 - Mindfulness Cues

Choose something in your environment that you will use as a trigger to remind you to bring your mind back to the present. For example, each time that your mobile phone rings, stop the mental chatter that keeps you stuck in the past or that fills you with anxiety about the future, and allow yourself to come back to the present moment.

Practice this every time your phone rings for the next 7 days.

Mindfulness Exercise # 4 - Bring Your Awareness to Your Breath

The simplest way to bring your mind back into the present moment is by focusing on your breath. Each time that you’re about to start a new activity, bring yourself fully into the present moment by doing the following:

• Bring your attention to the breath sensation.
• Allow yourself to feel the breath as it goes in.
• Then, allow yourself to feel the breath as it goes out.

For one, two, or three breaths, focus as much attention as you can on the sensation of breathing.

Mindfulness Exercise # 5 - Break Your Patterns or Routines

There are many things that we do the same way over and over again, day after day. These activities present a great opportunity for the mind to wander. After all, you don’t have to think about these things: you can do them on automatic pilot like brushing the teeth. You can bring more mindfulness to your day by breaking your patterns and routines.

Here are some examples:
  • If you normally brush your teeth with your right hand, try brushing with your left hand.
  • If you jog/walk/drive along the same route every day, try a different route.
  • If you add sugar to your coffee/tea, try drinking coffee/tea without sugar.
  • Reverse the order in which you do things. For example, reverse the order in which you towel yourself off, combing your hair etc
When you break your patterns or routines, the novelty of the situation will force your mind to pay attention. That is, it will bring your mind into the present moment.

Practice, repeatedly, in small easy beautiful steps. Each step is a wonder in itself, and each practice helps you to find that calm in the middle of the traffic of your life.

Good Luck!

How to Get Up Early in the Morning

“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”
– Ben Franklin

Wait...

Before that, why should I get up early in the morning.

Ask the famous question - What is in it for me?

Now, if you are a night owl and it works for you...Great. There is no reason to change if you are happy with it.

But for me getting up early is like a godsend gift and enjoy getting up early in the morning.
Some of top 10 personal benefits are:

1) Greet the day - I welcome the day with gratitude, compassion & cosmic energy. I practice lots of breath techniques in the early morning which we will discuss later.

2) Amazing start - I kick start my day in an amazing way by reconditioning & reprogramming my mind with positive affirmations. The alpha-theta brain waves at this time is very good for self-affirmation.

3) Silence - Early morning is one of the best time to practice silence & meditation. I have been meditating for more than 25 years from now.

4) Sunrise - I watch & allow the morning sun rise to pass through me. Today enough scientific evidence linked to the early morning electro magnetic waves to the long term health.

6) Exercise - My body is my temple and It is my personal responsibility to take care of this machine. Wealth again, property again, relationships again, happiness again, but never never body again. This is my time to practice my yoga.

6) Reading - I read every day - motivational, management, spiritual or philosophical. I read at-least 200 pages every day. I am pretty consistent with this habit for the past 10 years. I would have consumed few thousands books in this time period.

7) Writing - I am still in this process of enhancing my writing capabilities. I generally write for my blog or my facebook updates early in the morning. The flow & thoughts are fresh & creative.

8) Productivity - I am most productive in the early morning. I would complete almost 90% of my day task in the morning itself. Actually I have more time in my life to spend with my family.

9) Prioritize - I utilize the morning hours to prioritize & schedule my day. I know exactly when I have meetings, appointments or free time.

10) Family - I help my kids & wife to get them ready to leave for school & work. It gives such an immense happiness to watch them grow in front of your own eyes.

Wokay, Let's get to the topic, How to get up early...

Some simple & practical tips

Do not make changes drastically - Start slowly by waking up 15-30 minutes earlier than you are right now. Do not get excited and try to get 1-2 hours before your regular time. The body & mind needs some time to readjust to your new behaviour.

Sleep earlier - I suggest going to bed earlier, even if you do not get sleep. Try reading some book until then.

Put your alarm clock slightly away from your reach so that you don't press the snooze button and sleep again.

Get out of your bedroom as soon as you get up

Write some positive affirmations and stick it on the wall where you will face once you get up. Continue to mentally chant. This will prevent your inner voice nagging you to go back to bed.

Get Excited - You need to have something to do in the morning. This gives you the motivation to get up. You should have a reason to get up. Find this strong compelling reason to get up. This is the key to get up early in the morning.

Reward yourself - You need to create a self appreciation system for getting up in the morning. I enjoy the entire process of preparing & drinking my own coffee. It's a complete mindful coffee meditation for me.

Take advantage of the extra time you have now - Yoga, Exercise, Breathing, Meditate, Visualize, Write, Read, Plan & Prioritize etc etc.

Watch the Sky - It is beautiful, It is peaceful, It is quiet. Welcome & Enjoy the new day!

Break the habit - Once in a week, break this habit and allow yourself to sleep for little longer, until the day you get up early without any alarm or reason. The mind needs little bit of cajoling & coaxing.

Getting up early is one of the biggest reward & gift in my life.

How to Implement Daily Changes in Life

‘You will never change your life until you change something you do daily.’
~Mike Murdock

Are you hoping to someday be a writer, a musician, a designer, a programmer,a creative artist, a trainer, an entrepreneur, an expert at something?

How do you get there? Do you write your intention on a piece of paper, and put it in a bottle and launch it to sea, hoping it will manifest? No. The universe isn't going to make this happen. You are.

Do you set yourself a big goal to complete by the end of the year, or in three months? Sure, but that doesn't get the job done. In fact, if you think back on most examples in your life, setting big long-term goals probably doesn't work very often. How many times has this strategy been successful?

I’m going to lay down the law here, based on many many experiments I've done in the last 7 years: nothing will change unless you make a daily change.

I've tried weekly action steps, things that I do every other day, big bold monthly goals, lots of other permutations. None of them work except daily changes.

If you’re not willing to make it a daily change, you don’t really want to change your life in this way. You only like the idea of learning to draw/speak German/play guitar/program in java or php/etc. You don’t really want to do it.

So make a daily change. Click on the below presentation for a simple 7 step foolproof method to bring about daily changes. It is simple, easy & practical.

So are you now ready to implement daily changes. Remember, a year from now, you will wish you had started today. Take Action today!

How to create a new HABIT - Step by Step Plan

The individual who wants to reach the top in business must appreciate the might and force of habit. He must be quick to break those habits that can break him - and hasten to adopt those practices that will become the habits that will help him the success he desires - J.Paul Getty(One of the richest man in the world during 1950s)

All successful leaders understood habits deliver results!

Today psychology & neuro science research clearly points out that 90% of our behaviours are habitual. Nearly 90%, right from the time we get up from bed in the morning until the time we retire back to bed, there are hundreds of things we do the same way every day.

Good news is that habits help free up the mind while your body is automatic. So you don't have to spend that extra energy in paying complete attention. Bad news is that you become locked into an unconscious behavioural pattern which can inhibit your growth and success.

But we as human beings have the power of choice & will to exercise any habit.

One thing I have learned in my life is that creating new habits is like the power of compound habit interest. It is like the power of investing in SIP Mutual fund for 10-20 years, which accumulates continuously and gives you a huge return on investment.
It sounds really obvious when you say it, but if you do something small repeatedly, the benefits accrue greatly over time. It’s obvious, but not everyone puts it into practice.
All of us know this and you may also know the importance of getting up early, doing yoga/meditation, stretching/walking, healthy eating, decluttering the desk/house, writing, saving money etc etc.
But,
"Knowing is not Doing,
Doing is Knowing."

Let me share with you a simple step by step plan to create a successful habit.
Come up with a plan - Take 1 week to analyze your behaviors, pick a trigger, plan out how you’ll overcome your obstacles, pick the time of day you’ll implement habit, plan who your support network will be, and decide what your motivations are.
Pick only ONE small, positive habit — just 5 minutes to start with. You will expand it later, but start as small as possible. This is extremely important. If you can do the first week without missing a day, you can increase it to 10 minutes, then 15 minutes the third week, etc.
Mentally Rehearse your positive habit - Mind cannot be controlled. It has to be tricked. You have to mentally rehearse the new habit once you get up in the morning. If possible, more the mental rehearsal, more is the success.
Do the habit immediately after the next 4-6 weeks- Build in reminders. Try never to skip it. The more consistent you are, the stronger the habit.
Build in positive feedback Focus on enjoyment, make it a game, create competition, do it with a partner or group if possible.
Report daily to a social group (blog, Twitter, Facebook, email, or friends at work), use them for support when things get difficult. When you feel like not doing the habit, have one or more people you can call on for help.
Test, Adjust, Iterate Immediately - When you start a habit change, you are testing an approach, and it is very possible it will fail … this is good information, and you should use it to adjust your approach, and retry as soon as possible.
A few warnings:
Don’t worry about doing a lot of it. As you repeat this new habit, don’t worry about growing it. That’s a good way to fail. Most people fail because they try to do too much too quickly.
Don’t worry about missing a day or two. This is another reason people fail — they miss a day or two, then just give up. If you miss a day or two or three, just start again. It doesn't have to be a big deal.
Don’t do a bunch at a time. Do one per week at the most. One per month is even better.
Habits deliver Success, Happiness, Health & Wealth! Good luck on your new empowering habits in your life!

Stillness - Antidote for STRESS

Many think stillness is regarded as lazy, as being stuck in inaction, as a negative.
Actually, It’s not. It’s an action, and a powerful one.
What’s more, it can change your day, and in doing so change your life.
You’re in the middle of a high tension day, completely surrounded by work and meetings and emails and interruptions, or hassled by kids and phone calls and domestic errands and chores.
You pause. Stay still for a minute, and breathe. You close your eyes, and find a stillness within yourself. This stillness spreads to the rest of your body, and to your mind. It calms you, centers you, focuses you on what you’re doing right now, not on all you have to do and all that has happened.
The stillness becomes a powerful transformative action.
Stillness can be a powerful answer to the noise of others. It can be a way to push back against the buzz of the world, to take control. It can remind you of what’s important.
How to Practice

Stillness, surprisingly, doesn’t come naturally to many people. So practice.
1. Start your day in stillness. Whether it’s sitting with a cup of coffee as the world awakes, or sitting on a pillow and focusing on your breath, stillness is a powerful way to start your day. It sets the tone for things to come. Even 5-10 minutes is great.
2. Take regular stillness breaks. Every hour, set an alarm on your computer or phone to go off. Think of it as a bell that rings, reminding you to be still for a minute. During this minute, focus first on your breathing, to bring yourself into the present. Let the worries of the world around you melt away — all that is left is your breath. And then let your focus expand beyond your breath to your other senses, one at a time.
3. When chaos roars, pause. In the middle of a crisis or a noisy day, stop. Be still. Take a deep breath, and focus on that breath coming in, and going out. When the breath flows in mentally say “S0″ & when the breath flows out, mentally say “Ham”. Practice this technique for the next 7 breaths and find your inner stillness and then let your next action come from that stillness. Focus on that next action only.
Let stillness become your most powerful action. It could change your life.

STOP and be Happy, Peaceful & Useful

I’m surprised & thrilled to see my mother-in-law sincerely following all the guidelines recommended by her doctor for 15 consecutive days so perfectly after the recent cataract surgery(due to chronic diabetes).
She is very particular on the timings of the eye drops (approx 5 times a day) to be administered.
She is very meticulous in not watching TV(strict instruction from the doctor) and thereby missing all her favourite serials/soaps & game shows. She hasn't watched even a minute for the last 15 days. No crying, No worrying, No violence fed into her mind for the past 15 days through the idiot box. Her body, mind, emotions & life energies are perfectly stable that you can see her happiness flowing all over the place.
Do you know, that if you stop watching TV, you can become happy?
Many will not agree onto this point. Everyone is craving for the TV serials and the game shows. Why?
The mind is so conditioned and glued to the TV right from our early childhood(maybe from 3 months on-wards  and the rich visuals and emotions grabs all our attention. Just do a rough math here, watching 30 minutes a day for the past 10 years means approximately 4562 hours of TV watching. If you observe this phenomenon keenly, many of your belief systems you are unconsciously holding had been conditioned by this box which is continuously streaming visuals that gets deeply embedded into your sub-conscious mind.
Naturally, mind is a negative instrument designed to take care of our survival. That’s why, it becomes very easy for us to get hooked to negative information, opinions, emotions etc. You have to use your will-power to exercise your choice of positivism & optimism. A balanced mind will not blame media, because negativity sells, they are in business.
I haven’t watched TV for almost an year now. I’m happy, peaceful & useful to others. Apart from being happy, there are numerous other benefits of not watching TV. By the way, I haven’t recharged my DTH cable service for more than a year and saved lots of money too.
Some benefits of not watching TV are:
1. More relaxed, calm & peaceful living
2. Better clarity in thinking
3. More energy levels
4. Become more emotionally stable
5. More time to spend with your children
6. Become more aware of yourself & others
7. Connect with real people & maybe develop business/relationships
8. Lots of time to read ( 30 minutes of reading, you would have completed more that 200 books in your core area in 10 year, which puts you in a position of mastery over others)
9. Time to explore outdoors & nature
10. Do some active exercise & become fit and healthy
11. Spend quality time with your partner and know each other better
12. Give time to help others(charity, religious or social activities)
13. Last but not the least, saves lots of money
and many many more benefits.
Every human being knows that daily walking, little bit exercise, eating healthy food is important and good for health. But they do not practice it unless they are inflicted upon a huge pain like an heart-attack, life threatening trauma or a situation etc. It should pain them physically, mentally or emotionally. Then they are forced to change by nature.
Knowing this principle, smart people have always learned to lower their threshold of the pain themselves and change. Otherwise ,they know, life will force them to change.
What do you want to choose? Your own intelligent way or a life threatening way like my mother-in-law.
Choice is yours! STOP watching TV & be happy, peaceful & useful.
STOP watching TV and become more Productive, Energetic & Happier at work-spot.
Now, are you ready to take Action!
Always take baby steps. Start with just one day. Maybe, today or tomorrow. If you were successful, give yourself a small self-appreciation(anything which you like). Then experiment with yourself on Day 2. If you fail in this experiment, it is OK. There are no failure, only feedback or results. Start the experiment next day. Just that simple!
